Something remarkable happened today.
There comes a day when you’re content about settling down; nice house, set routines, kid out of the house and enjoying your free time – basically living a comfortable life. The day started just like every other day under my parent’s roof in the country side in Germany, and it was going by smoothly until my mom received this message:
What does this mean? It’s basically a message from the government that I still hope to receive one day.
My mom was selected in the US Green Card lottery!
This is going to change their lives. Because she was selected, my dad (her spouse) automatically is eligible for it and together they have to make the decision to either to sell everything they have to move to the US (and be closer to me) or forfeit the Green Card. It’s difficult for me to give them any advice because I honestly wouldn’t know what to do either. It’s such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that it feels such a shame to give up. But, is it really worth it to leave their comfortable living and move to a part of the world that’s much more expensive and build a new life?
This is one of those life crossroads and while there may not be a right path, it’ll just be different. The opportunity is given to them, and now it’s their call to either take it or leave it.
What would YOU do?

I’d take it.
tough call… it is seriously expensive… and while europe may not be a great place to live, isn’t germany pretty solid?
i dunno janice, health care is ridiculously expensive there. though Mexico is really close by.
what happens if you decide to leave USA?
You’re right that Europe isn’t doing so well economically, but neither is the US. My parents are settled in Germany and it’d be a tough transition to drop everything and move to a new country. If they do move here, it would certainly affect my plans of moving to London one day, or somewhere back to Europe.
