There’s nothing quite like the emotion of a surprise proposal, and I absolutely love being there to capture it all. This one took place at the beautiful Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, and it was filled with raw emotion, joyful smiles, and the kind of happiness that’s unforgettable. Every bride responds differently—whether it’s happy tears, tight hugs, or dropping to the knee alongside their partner—and I treasure being able to document those unscripted moments.
I met the groom at the entrance as they arrived separately and we walked through the garden together to finalize the plan. He chose the Japanese Garden as the proposal spot—a peaceful setting with a koi-filled pond and elegant architecture. As we waited for his soon-to-be fiancée, who was running a bit behind, I could see the nerves setting in. When she finally arrived with her sister, I discreetly captured their sweet reunion from behind some bushes. You could feel the anticipation as he led her to the proposal spot and then dropped to one knee. The joy on her face, the way she beamed and hugged him—it was pure magic.
That’s the moment I step out from my hiding spot and get to say, “Let me be the first to congratulate you!” From there, we walked through the gardens together, capturing golden hour portraits of the newly engaged couple in some of the most scenic spots Descanso has to offer.
If you’re planning a proposal, consider making it even more memorable by documenting it—so you can relive the joy, the emotion, and the surprise for years to come.

He was so nervous as he waited for his soon-to-be fiancée!

Here he goes!

She said yes!

And we continued on with posed, engagement photographs for the remainder of the session.

xoxo,
Hiromi
