Surprise Proposal | LA Arboretum in Arcadia

There’s something incredibly special about capturing a surprise proposal, and this recent session at the LA Arboretum in Arcadia was no exception. The setting couldn’t have been more beautiful — lush gardens, serene pathways, and a quiet morning atmosphere that made the moment feel even more intimate.

The day started with me discreetly meeting the couple at the entrance to the Arboretum. My job was to stay invisible, capturing candid moments as they strolled hand in hand, unaware of the big moment that was about to unfold (well, one of them at least!). The sunlight was a little harsh, but we used it to our advantage, creating natural light-filled images that added a dreamy quality to their walk.

When they reached the proposal spot — a picturesque, tucked-away area surrounded by greenery — the magic truly happened. From my vantage point, I photographed the look of surprise, joy, and love as the question was asked and answered with an emphatic yes.

Getting lost a little bit… 😀

They found the location!

He was so nervous, he was pretending to tie his shoe!

Yay he did it!

She said ‘Yes!’

Afterward, we took advantage of the beautiful surroundings for a mini engagement session. The gardens gave us endless inspiration, from towering trees to colorful flowers, and we even managed to find some softer light in the shade for more intimate portraits.

This session reminded me why I love proposal photography so much — the raw emotions, the element of surprise, and the chance to help couples relive these precious moments forever.

Congratulations to this wonderful couple! It was an honor to capture your love story in one of my favorite places to shoot. If you’re planning a proposal and want to ensure the moment is beautifully documented, I’d love to chat and help make it unforgettable!

xoxo,
Hiromi

WELCOME

I call myself a ‘people’ photographer, specializing in capturing the personalities of people through family, newborn and event photography. I’m originally German-Japanese and was raised embracing both cultures. I was raised in Japan and in many parts of Europe, until I finally settled in Los Angeles to call it my permanent home. My love for photography started at an early age. A fun hobby eventually turned in to a passion when I found joy in taking candid photos of my friends. Naturally, my love for photography turned in to a lifestyle and I was asked to photograph people’s milestones and celebrations. And so, my photography business was born in 2010.
